Mūlādhāra, the root chakra. Your foundation, your anchor to life.
Located at the very base of the physical body, around the perineum and tailbone, the Root Chakra, or Mūlādhāra in Sanskrit, is the first of the seven main energy centers. Its name means “root” (Mula) and “support” (Adhara).
Chakras are an idea from the yogic traditions, a way of describing inner experience. They are not an anatomical fact, and they are not linked to any illness. In that tradition, the root chakra is the foundation of the whole energy system. Before you can rise emotionally or spiritually, the base needs to feel solid, steady, and connected to the Earth.
Symbolism and Correspondences
In the yogic tradition, Mūlādhāra is pictured as a deep red lotus with four petals. At its center, a yellow square stands for the Earth element (Tattva Prithvi), our connection to the material, tangible world. It is often shown supported by the elephant Airavata, a symbol of unshakable strength.

Inner Security
The root chakra is said to govern our most primal instincts: the survival instinct, the need for safety (physical, financial, emotional), and our sense of belonging to our body, our family, and the planet itself.
It is the center of our “right to exist.” When it is balanced, we don't just get by. We feel safe enough to thrive, with a natural trust that our essential needs will be met.
When the Foundation Is Balanced and When It Isn't
When Mūlādhāra is balanced: you feel stable, confident, and energized. You have a good relationship with your body and the material world. You feel “at home” wherever you are.
When Mūlādhāra is out of balance: blockage or overactivity can show up as constant anxiety, irrational fears about safety or money, a feeling of being disconnected, or, at the other extreme, excessive materialism.
Caring for This Chakra
Caring for your root chakra is above all about reconnecting with your body and the earth: walking in nature, doing physical activities that ground you, and making sure your basic needs are met. It is the essential first step in any personal growth work.
This is a wellbeing practice, not medicine. If you have a physical symptom that lasts, such as ongoing exhaustion, see a doctor first.
