Svādhisthāna, the sacral chakra. Your center of pleasure, creativity, and emotion.
Located in the lower belly, about two finger-widths below the navel, the Sacral Chakra, or Svādhisthāna in Sanskrit, is the second main energy center. Its name is poetically translated as “the seat of the self” or “one's own dwelling place.”
Chakras are an idea from the yogic traditions, a way of describing inner experience. They are not an anatomical fact, and they are not linked to any illness. In that tradition, if the first chakra is the solid ground we stand on, the second is the water that flows within us. It is the center of movement, change, and fluidity. It invites us to move from simply surviving to experiencing life through the senses, by connecting with our capacity to feel and to want.
Symbolism and Correspondences
In the yogic tradition, Svādhisthāna is pictured as a bright orange lotus with six petals. At its center, a white crescent moon stands for the Water element (Tattva Jala), representing fluidity, the lunar cycles, and the world of emotions. It is associated with the Makara, a mythical creature that guards the deep waters of the unconscious.

The Flow of Life and Creativity
The sacral chakra is said to govern our emotional life, our sensuality, our sexual energy, and our raw creative force. It is the engine of our desires, our passion for life, and our ability to be close to other people.
It is the center of our “right to feel” and our “right to want.” When it flows freely, we aren't overwhelmed by our emotions. We experience them fully. We accept change gracefully, like water adapting to the terrain, we allow ourselves pleasure without guilt, and creativity comes naturally.
When Your Inner Water Is Balanced and When It Isn't
When Svādhisthāna is balanced: you feel emotionally steady, creative, and full of joy. Your relationships are healthy, and you express your sensuality naturally and respectfully. You move through life's ups and downs with ease and flexibility.
When Svādhisthāna is out of balance: blockage or overactivity can show up as emotional coldness, guilt around pleasure, a lack of creativity, or a fear of intimacy. At the other extreme, too much of this energy can look like dramatic oversensitivity, or emotional or sexual dependency.
Caring for This Chakra
Caring for your sacral chakra means honoring your emotions and waking up your creative side: reconnecting with the water element (baths, swimming), dancing to loosen your hips, making art without worrying about how good it turns out, and exploring your sensuality in a healthy way. It is about learning to “flow” with life instead of resisting it.
