Always Tired? When Rest Isn't Enough

Always tired despite exercise, sleep, and vitamins? Why some tiredness resists the usual approaches, and a gentle way to explore it after seeing a doctor.

Always Tired? When Rest Isn't Enough

You get enough sleep. You eat reasonably well. You exercise. And yet you're tired, all the time, for months or even years.

It's one of the most frustrating situations there is: feeling like you're “doing everything right” without results. Having tried everything you were told to try.

If you're always tired, start with your doctor. Being tired all the time can have many causes, and some of them need medical attention. Everything in this article comes after that step, or alongside it, never instead of it.

This article offers another way of looking at tiredness: not as a problem of quantity (too little sleep, not enough iron) but as a problem of circulation and buildup.

Two very different kinds of tiredness

It helps to tell two kinds apart:

Tiredness from running low: the body lacks something: sleep, nutrients, physical recovery. It eases when you get what's missing. This is the “normal” kind.

Tiredness from overload: the body is saturated, with accumulated stress, unprocessed emotions, tension that doesn't let go. Extra rest may not help, because a shortage isn't what's behind it.

Doctors are well equipped to look into the first kind. The second is harder to pin down.

What energy means in a holistic approach

In Eastern traditions (Chinese medicine, Ayurveda, Reiki), unexplained tiredness is often seen as a problem of how life energy circulates, not necessarily of how much there is.

Energy can be plentiful but “blocked”: stagnant in certain parts of the body, unavailable for the things you need it for.

These blockages can have various causes:

  • Unprocessed emotional shocks (grief, breakups, hard experiences)
  • Stress that has piled up over several years
  • Deep muscle tension, which some call “body memory”
  • Environments that drain you (constant noise, repeated conflict, being constantly online)

Signs of “energetic” tiredness

In the energy-work view, certain signs are linked to what's called “energetic” tiredness:

  • The tiredness is there from the moment you wake up, even after a good night
  • You feel “heavy” for no obvious physical reason
  • You feel like you absorb other people's emotions
  • It gets worse after certain situations (crowded places, “draining” people)
  • Some areas of your body are constantly tense with no physical cause
  • You've had medical tests and they don't explain everything (ask your doctor what's left to check)

In this view, the cause is described as an overloaded energy system. That isn't a medical explanation: if this tiredness lasts, get it checked.

What can Reiki offer when you're always tired?

In the tradition, Reiki is seen as a “cleansing” of the energy field. Here's how practitioners describe a session, and what people say they feel:

  1. Working on knots: according to the tradition, areas of stagnant energy are worked on to get circulation going again
  2. Balancing the chakras: certain energy centers seen as under-active are worked on (the root chakra for grounding, the solar plexus for vitality)
  3. A time to relax: many people say they reach a state of deep relaxation during a session, and some describe it as more restful than ordinary sleep
  4. Emotional release: some people say feelings come up during or after a session, and describe a gradual lightening

How many sessions?

One session rarely changes the picture. I won't give you a number I can't stand behind. What I've noticed: a single session mostly shows how your system responds. Some people tell me they notice something shift over three or four sessions, spaced two to three weeks apart. Others don't, and that's part of the picture.

A regular Reiki session (monthly or every two weeks) can also be a maintenance practice, like exercise or meditation.

A complementary approach, not an alternative

I want to be honest: Reiki is a support, not a standalone answer to ongoing exhaustion. It's best combined with:
