Vishuddha, the throat chakra. Your center of communication, expression, and truth.
Located at the hollow of the throat and including the neck, jaw, and vocal cords, the Throat Chakra, or Vishuddha in Sanskrit, is the fifth main energy center. Its name means “especially pure” or “center of purification.”
Chakras are an idea from the yogic traditions, a way of describing inner experience. They are not an anatomical fact, and they are not linked to any illness. In that tradition, Vishuddha is the first of the “upper” chakras, marking the passage from physical and emotional experience to the realm of the mind and subtle expression. It is the bottleneck through which the feelings of the heart and the thoughts of the mind must pass to reach the outer world through speech.
Symbolism and Correspondences
In the yogic tradition, Vishuddha is pictured as a lotus with sixteen petals, in a color ranging from bright sky blue to turquoise. At its center is a white circle holding an inverted triangle, which itself holds a full circle (standing for the full moon). These shapes stand for the Ether or Space element (Tattva Akasha), the emptiness a sound needs in order to resonate.

The Voice of Your Truth
The throat chakra is said to govern our ability to communicate, not only through speech but also through creative expression (singing, writing, art). It is the center of our integrity: the ability to line up what we think, what we feel, and what we say.
It is the center of our “right to speak” and our “right to be heard.” Even more important, Vishuddha is the center of listening: listening closely to others, and also listening to your own inner voice. This is where we “purify” our thoughts and emotions before voicing them, turning inner chaos into clear, constructive speech.
When Your Inner Expression Is Balanced and When It Isn't
When Vishuddha is balanced: your communication is clear, honest, and fluid. You express your personal truth with confidence, but without aggression. You know when to speak and when to listen. You are creative, and your voice rings true. You feel able to stand up for your convictions.
When Vishuddha is out of balance: a blockage (underactivity) often shows up as a fear of public speaking, trouble putting feelings into words, a weak voice, excessive shyness, or the feeling of having “a lump in your throat.” At the other extreme, overactivity can lead to endless chatter, an inability to listen, gossip, a habit of interrupting or talking too loudly to dominate the room, or even lying.
Caring for This Chakra
Caring for your throat chakra means freeing your voice: singing (even in the shower) is one of the best exercises, along with reciting mantras. It also means practicing active listening, drinking water regularly to soothe your throat, keeping a journal to clarify your thoughts, and above all, practicing honesty with kindness, toward yourself and others.
This is a wellbeing practice, not medicine. If you have a throat problem or a physical symptom that lasts, see a doctor first.
