When Stress Shows Up in Your Body

Stress can feel very physical. A tight neck before a hard conversation, a knot in the stomach, a clenched jaw you only notice at the end of the day. These sensations are real. You're not imagining them.

In the energy-work view, the body can also be a way of getting your attention when something is weighing on you. That's a way of looking at it, not a medical explanation, and I want to be clear about what this article is and isn't.

This article is not a map that tells you what a pain “means.” Nobody can tell you from the outside that a sore back means one specific emotion. What it offers is a set of questions you can ask yourself, once a doctor has had a look at the physical side.

Doctor first, always

Any pain or symptom that is new, lasts, comes back, or worries you deserves a medical check before anything else. Stress is one possible cause among many, and you can't tell which one it is from your couch. Everything below only makes sense once a doctor has ruled out a physical cause, or alongside the care they recommend.

Where stress is often felt

Here are eight places where people commonly notice tension. For each one: what it can feel like, when to see a doctor, and a question you can ask yourself.

Neck and shoulders

Stiff neck, tight shoulders. Many people notice tension here when they're under pressure. A question to ask yourself: am I carrying responsibilities that aren't mine, at work or in the family? Is it hard for me to delegate or ask for help?

Throat

A knotted throat, a voice that goes quiet. A sore throat or lost voice has plenty of physical causes, so start there. If the tightness comes mostly when you hold something back, ask yourself: is there something I haven't said, for fear of being judged or of conflict?

If you'd like to explore this further, see Throat Chakra Blocked? Signs and Voice, a reflection tool from the energy-work tradition, not a medical explanation.

Chest and breathing

Tightness in the chest, difficulty breathing. Before anything else: pain in the chest or trouble breathing should be checked by a doctor right away. If it's sudden or severe, call your local emergency number. What follows only applies to tension whose physical causes have already been ruled out.

If that's your case, a question to ask yourself: am I holding back sadness, or protecting myself from a situation or a relationship that feels suffocating?

Stomach and digestion

Bloating, a burning feeling, a stomach in knots. Many people feel stress in their stomach. If you have ongoing digestive trouble, that's a medical matter: get it checked. Once that's done, a question to ask yourself: is there a situation or a person I can't seem to “digest”? Do I feel like I'm losing control?

Lower back

Lower back pain, sciatica, a back that's had enough. Back pain has many physical causes. Sciatica needs a medical exam, so see a doctor before looking any further. Then, if it fits, ask yourself: do I feel unsupported, or worried about money, the future, or my relationships?

Hips, pelvis, and knees

Stiff hips, pelvic pain, sore knees. These are joints, so they get a medical or physical check first. After that, a question to ask yourself: is there a decision or a change I'm putting off, or something I'm resisting?

Skin

Irritation, redness, sensitive skin. If you have eczema, psoriasis, or another skin condition, see a dermatologist for a diagnosis and appropriate care. A question you can ask yourself alongside that: do I feel overwhelmed by my surroundings, with my boundaries crossed too often?

Head and jaw

Headaches and migraines. Frequent headaches, or one that changes in character, should be examined by a doctor. A question to ask yourself: is my mind running hot, am I trying to control and figure out everything?

Clenched jaw and teeth grinding. A dentist or a doctor can tell you what's going on. A question to ask yourself: is there a situation or a person that frustrates me and that I keep biting my tongue about?

Easing the load

A painkiller relieves pain, and that counts for a lot: keep taking what your doctor has prescribed. But quieting an alarm doesn't always address what set it off. An energy session can sit alongside medical care, never in place of it.

What I offer is a time to put some weight down, a moment to slow down and listen, without your body having to shout to be heard. Small daily things can help too: a few slow breaths, a walk, a pause between two tasks.

If you recognize one of these places in your own body, we can talk. Get in touch for an energy session.

An important note. This text is a reflection tool from the energy-work world. It doesn't replace a medical consultation. If you have ongoing pain, new symptoms, or discomfort that lasts more than a few weeks, see a health professional first. An energy session supports your wellbeing. It is not a medical treatment.
