Is Reiki Real? 3 Common Myths

Energy work has a serious image problem. Between the far-out talk, the over-the-top mysticism, and the promises of miracles, it makes sense that rational minds are wary.

You often hear “it's a magical gift,” or the opposite: “it's just a placebo, it only works if you believe in it.”

Time to tackle these myths. At Ektaya, we don't deal in illusions. Reiki and energy sessions aren't magic. Reiki is a structured practice, born in Japan in the 1920s, with a defined protocol and a clear aim: to give you a chance to relax and tune in to yourself.

Myth 1: you have to believe in it for it to work

This is the skeptics' number one argument. But a session doesn't require you to believe in anything.

Think of the practitioner as a tuning fork. It's an image, not an equation: the practitioner offers a steady, calming presence, and your system tunes in to it or doesn't. It varies from person to person, and it's never your fault if you feel nothing during a session.

Whether you're skeptical or convinced, you're welcome. Some people feel a lot, others almost nothing. That says nothing about you or your openness.

Myth 2: the practitioner uses their own energy

No. Reiki, which means universal life energy, is based on channeling. In the tradition, a good practitioner doesn't give you their energy, and doesn't take yours.

The practitioner is described as a channel, bringing an outside flow into your system. That's why, in this tradition, a session can take place remotely, without physical contact. Practitioners describe it as a transmission that isn't limited by distance. This is the tradition's explanation, not something science has shown.

Myth 3: it will make my illness go away

Let's be clear and careful. An energy session doesn't replace medicine. It doesn't set a broken bone or treat a virus with a wave of the hand.

What it offers is valuable in a different way: a moment of deep relaxation. In that state, the parasympathetic nervous system, the body's rest mode, can kick in, which creates good conditions for restful sleep and recovery.

It's also a space to let go of emotional weight that drains your energy, and to give your body room to settle back into balance on its own.

Taking your power back

Energy work isn't here to save you. It's here to give you back a sense of ownership over your body and your emotions. It's a tool to help you slow down and recalibrate, so you can feel more in the driver's seat of your own life.

Is Reiki scientifically validated?

Reiki and energy work are practices without solid scientific backing. No evidence shows that an “energy” flows through the chakras, or that energy sessions produce effects beyond placebo and relaxation. If you're dealing with a physical or psychological condition, a health professional (a doctor, a psychotherapist) is the right person to see. An energy session can be a support, not an alternative.
