Sahasrara, the crown chakra. Your center of spirituality, enlightenment, and pure awareness.
Located at the top of the skull, at the fontanelle, and extending energetically a little above the head, the Crown Chakra, or Sahasrara in Sanskrit, is the seventh and last main energy center. Its name translates literally as “thousand petals” or “infinite.”
Chakras are an idea from the yogic traditions, a way of describing inner experience. They are not an anatomical fact, and they are not linked to any illness. In that tradition, Sahasrara is the high point of the chakra system, the gateway for universal energy and the seat of pure awareness. Here it is no longer about our individual identity (the ego), but about our direct connection with the “All,” the divine, or the universe as a whole. It is the center of transcendence and ultimate unity.
Symbolism and Correspondences
In the yogic tradition, Sahasrara is pictured as a spectacular lotus with a thousand petals (standing for infinity), in a color ranging from deep violet to brilliant white, sometimes tinged with gold. Unlike the other chakras, it often has no animal or geometric symbol at its center, only a pure light or a picture of absolute emptiness, meaning it lies beyond material elements and forms.
- Location: Top of the skull (fontanelle), the highest point of the being.

- Element: Cosmic Thought / Pure Consciousness (it goes beyond the physical elements).
- Bija mantra: The silent OM (the silence that follows the sound), or sometimes Visarga.
- Key function: Spirituality, connection to the divine, enlightenment, universal wisdom, unity.
- Associated stones: Rock crystal (clear quartz), amethyst, selenite.
Awareness and Unity
The crown chakra is said to govern our spiritual life, our search for meaning, and our ability to sense a reality larger than our material existence. It is the point of integration where all the lessons of the lower chakras come together into a broader wisdom.
It is the center of our “right to know” and our “right to understand” in the highest sense. When it is open, the boundaries of the ego dissolve. We no longer feel separate from others, or from nature. We experience deep peace and complete trust in the flow of life, knowing we are part of an interconnected whole.
When Your Inner Crown Is Balanced and When It Isn't
When Sahasrara is balanced: you feel a deep connection with the divine (however you define it), unshakable inner peace, and a sharp sense of your life's purpose. You are open-minded, free of prejudice, and able to see the sacred in every part of life. Fear of death may soften, replaced by a sense that consciousness continues.
When Sahasrara is out of balance: a blockage (underactivity) often shows up as spiritual cynicism, rigid materialism, a deep feeling of isolation or separation, and a lack of purpose in life. At the other extreme, overactivity can lead to “spiritual bypassing” (using spirituality to avoid human problems), a sense of detachment from the physical body, a loss of contact with everyday reality, or an inflated spiritual ego.
Caring for This Chakra
Caring for your crown chakra means cultivating presence: silent meditation is the classic practice for this center. It also means spending time in silence, opening yourself to the beauty of the unknown, studying wisdom texts, and above all, allowing yourself to let go of the need to control everything intellectually, so you can open to the direct experience of mystery.
